New guy needs help.
I have a D5300,and it has no commander mode, should the pop up flash trigger my two Bower SFD926N flashes in slave mode ? Don't know if I have all the settings right. I don't want to buy a wirless commander like a Debao SU-800 if I dont have to. Any suggestions as to the way to go would be most helpfull, thanks Kenh

An optical slave mode requires the triggering flash to be in MANUAL flash mode. Your camera has the menu (E1 I think?) to set the internal flash to either TTL or Manual mode. If manual, you can set its power level there too (very low power probably triggers the optical slave OK). The remote optical slave is also in Manual flash mode.

The very common problem/question is that if the triggering flash is in TTL mode, it fires a TTL preflash, which triggers the optical salve too early (before the shutter is open), and then it appears as if the slave could not contribute to the lighting. The triggering flash must be in MANUAL mode (no preflash). Then it should easily work fine.
