I know this is a non af-s lens, but other than lack of auto focus, will this lens work on a D5200? I have been doing some wildlife photography and want more than 300mm (I have a 55-300mm) but not sure if I need 500 or 600mm (sigma or new Tamron) All comments welcome. Love this website. You all are so smart and experienced in photography. I am learning a lot from you all. Thanks in advance.

If you can live with the lack of a focus motor, and focusing it yourself, I would go with the Nikon. I have the Tamron 200-500mm, and have shot the third party counterparts, I for one would go with the Nikon.

I have this lens and I like it alot, but as has been said if you can do with out auto focus then go for it. If you want the extra reach go for the Tamron 150-600mm from what I have seen this is a nice sharp lens and at the price I have pre-ordered one.

PS you are always needing more reach in wildlife photography.

Thanks for the replies. Auto focus is nice. So maybe I will wait for the Tamron. Because of the unknowns of wildlife I hand hold. I hope the Tamron is not too big and heavy to use it that way. I guess just have to watch the shutter speeds and adjust everything else accordingly. I wonder how much difference in image quality there is between the 2 lenses. I would expect the Nikon to be sharper that the Tamron . Wish they weren't dragging their feet with the release of the Nikon mount of the Tamron. Scott, when you get yours please post info ASAP. Where you have the 80-400 already..Thanks
