Nikon refused Cashback

A few weeks ago I was looking for a telephoto lens, looking at the Currys PC World site I saw a Nikon 55-200 non VR DX lens for £129. The site clearly stated that this was part of Nikons 2014 Cashback scheme and I could claim £20 cashback.

So I went on the Nikon site filled in the form and added a scan of the receipt and guarantee. After over a week they got back to me claiming that the scan was unreadable, which was nonsense.
I went to the local library and photocopied the documents and sent them back by mail. Another week passed and Nikon returned the documents with a letter claiming that only the VR lens was included in the Cashback scheme but I could appeal.

So once again I resent the documents along with a letter stating that Currys PC World site clearly said that this lens was included. However on looking at the site I noted that the Cashback offer has now been removed!.

A couple of days ago Nikon e mailed me and told me - rather abruptly I felt that I should contact Currys PC World - so much for customer loyalty :(

Always check with Nikon before you trust what a retailer tells you about rebates. Doesn't really matter what Currys site says. If Nikon's site says something different they aren't going to honor it.

It's a typical case of "the image shown on our site might not display the actual item..." etc. etc. . Lies and propaganda. Game of make-believe: we just did not have a picture of a VR version of that lens (ha, ha, ha!)...

I don't remember seeing that lens on the rebates list... Sounds to me like Nikon got the paperwork on your non-qualifying lens, didn't know how to handle it and sent you some garbled message about unreadable paperwork to get it off their plate. If that's the case, methinks your retailer either made an honest mistake in listing the 55-200mm as a qualifying lens or they did something a little less-than-scrupulous. The fact the lens in question is no longer showing as qualifying for a rebate on their website reinforces this suspicion. I'm not familiar with the vendor so I have no opinion, but this really doesn't sound like Nikon is screwing you.

This is nothing new from the likes of PC World/Currys - anything to get a dodgy sale in and up the profits... no wander they're always so empty and close to collapsing.
If they carry on with tactics like this, they will go the way of Comet!

Problem is now, it's your word against theirs, and unless you have a screenshot of the page that stated the non VR was included in the cashback, PCW/Currys will walk away scot free of any wrong doing, and no doubt will just say you should have read the Nikon T&Cs (which no disrespect to you should have been done anyway).
If you bought it in the last 21 days - get a full refund. They have a no quibble money back gurantee and they cannot argue against any reason you give.

Did you contact Curry's PC World to see if they would do anything? Some retailers will step up and make things right. I agree with what someone else said...this isn't Nikon's fault. The fault lies solely with the retailer. If the retailer wants to retain you as a customer, hopefully they will make it right.

I'd be damned if I'd ever use Currys for photo goods anyway. I always support dedicated photo shops. My local Nikon pro shop will always match internet prices providing it's not grey goods.
I'm also of the opinion that Nikon aren't too blame here, they've always done my cash backs pretty quick.
