So it's already been a very long time trying to figure out what was wrong. If you remember, initially I thought the problem was the 1.7x TC. But after exhaustive testing, much to my surprise it is the lens. I still have the 300mm f/4 non-VR lens, but that one makes noise when focusing (which it didn't used to do). For now I will just make due with it. But as for the Nikon Repair Center, no doubt they will be going on a holiday vacation very soon so not sure I'd get my lens returned until mid-January if I sent it now. Lol.
