I made the mistake of using canned air to spray on to my sensor filter. Did I say 'mistake'? Change that to big mistake. The can's contents were low and it spit some kind of liquid on to the filter. After that, my sensor looked spotted. That drove me nuts. Stupid error on my part and I beat myself up within an inch of my life. The spots didn't impact general photos, but I did note some artifacts in the "sky". The problem was emphasized with the use of HDR.
I did some research.
I had three options. 1) Go north. 2) Go south (SPTS). 3) Mail the camera to Nikon. There was no way I was going to ship to Nikon.
Fast forward to last Friday....... Since Southern Photo Technical Services was too far, I decided to take the camera to a closer shop that "cleaned sensors". Yep, they cleaned it, and they didn't damage anything. That was the positive. On the negative side, when the guy was done, he said, "It might need to be cleaned again." That had cost me $53 and he didn't get all the spots. If I asked him to clean it again, that would be another $53. Nice local shop, just not too professional.
Today, I drove down to North Miami to get my D700 sensor cleaned. The shop I was headed to is Southern Photo Technical Services.
Southern Photo Technical Services is an Authorized Nikon Service Center and they've been around since 1946. I should have gone there in the first place. I took the camera in and waited for it. The technician finished up and told me he had to clean it 6 times to get all the spots. He also updated the camera's software (it was needed) and cleaned the exterior. As a bonus, the shop will clean the sensor again within 30 days for free if anything should shake loose. Cost? $53. The job was perfect.
