Nikon D7100 - Help in Manual Mode

I'm transitioning from a Nikon D90 to a Nikon D7100. I've shot in manual mode for a year or so, and have gotten comfortable with it. When working with the new camera though, when in manual mode and getting things adjusted for the shot, it will kick to "Bulb", then my next click to + or - side it will go full bars either way (with only one click) instead of gradually. I'm suspecting I have something set to Auto on the camera that I'm not aware of, but I don't know what it would be. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the website

Do you mean, when you turn the rear command dial to adjust the shutter speed it goes into bulb mode.

Sorry, my terminology is definitely going to need some work. Yes Paul, rear command dial when I change the shutter speed will not seem to change in small increments as I was used to. I try adjusting a little, then it will change to "Bulb", adjust one more click and it goes to a bunch of bars to the minus.....one click the other way and it goes to a bunch of bars to the plus. Like instead of just one click adjustment it's being spun far to the extreme. (man I really need work on terminology...I apologize).

Welcome to the forum. So your exposure metre is the one going hay wire? When adjusting the shutter speed? Can you show us what is happening maybe with a video? Seems like a technical issue if it is as you say.

No remedy by changing the ISO. No remedy by adjusting the aperture. No extreme dark or extreme bright in the photos I'm working with. The metering indicator seems to just not be responding the same. I'm wondering currently if it might be something to do with Metering Mode....researching it a little more.

99% chance here that it's user error. Although I have been shooting manual, I only did what I was shown to do, and did not set up the metering mode myself. I'm currently heading in to compare those settings on the new camera compared to the old and see what may be different.

Hi Kathy, welcome to the forum!
I haven't got my D7100 with me at the moment, but if you go through the manual and menu, I'm pretty sure there are settings for what increments the ISO & possibly shutter etc is changed by moving the command wheel - If this increment is too big, you will loose fine control.

I tried resetting to factory settings yesterday, thought for sure it would remedy, but no change. I believe the only change I made this time around was clicked Yes for Fine Tune Optimal Exposure instead of No... tried it again.......no "Bulb" notification popping up now, and the metering indicator appears to be changing correctly in response to the rear dial. Thanks so much for input and ideas....I was scratching my head after multiple attempts to figure it out.

Glad you have got it sorted out.

I'm actually really glad I had that issue that caused me to search for message boards to remedy it. I didn't know this site existed until I did so. Looks like a really neat "place"...and I'm looking forward to it being my new hangout. MikeW-I'm always up for humor....I considered a very similar post last night, but wasn't sure of the humorous/serious nature of the wonderful folks here, and didn't want to lose my helpers. ;) Instead I looked up a diagram of my camera and while pointing my finger at the "thingie" I turn, I made note of the actual terminology.

I think the 'thingy' you're referring to, is technically called the 'Left Handed Jiggle Sprocket'. That is all. Btw, welcome along..
