My Nikon D5100 I ordered from adorama last week is on the way! It was a toss up between D5100 and D7000 in the end I got the D5100 and a few more lenses. I figure if I really enjoy this hobby I can upgrade to the D7100 in a year or so and the D5100 might be a bit easier for a complete newbie like me to learn on. I bought it with the 18-55mm kit lens and 55-300mm VR lens. Added a 35mm lens and also have the Tokina 11-16mm ultrawide. I added a few of the essentials to my order like an spare battery, memory cards, filters, speedlight 400. I have a bought some books from amazon about my new camera and Digital photography in general so that should keep me busy for a good while. I want to learn to fully take advantage of the cameras abilities and learn to shoot in "manual'' mode as quickly as possible. My friend has the D5000 and he mostly uses it in auto mode which seems like a bit of a waste to me! One thing has me concerned the spec sheet on the D5100 has operating temperature 0-40 C. Well, I was planning on shooting the aurora borealis with this, usually its -30 C or colder in the winter. I know the Nikon can handle it as my friend and I have been outside nearly an hour at that temperature and he has had his camera and still takes pictures. I'm just wondering if there is any risk to damage of the camera if subjected to extreme temperatures. I will have to pick up a sturdy tripod for those aurora shots. The only thing I might add in the future is an walkaround lens like the 18-105mm or 18-200mm. It will be a lot easier to put that on my camera and slip the 35mm in my bag and just go when I'm going on holidays, then carry around more lenses.
