Nikon D5100 incoming!

My Nikon D5100 I ordered from adorama last week is on the way!
It was a toss up between D5100 and D7000 in the end I got the D5100 and a few more lenses. I figure if I really enjoy this hobby I can upgrade to the D7100 in a year or so and the D5100 might be a bit easier for a complete newbie like me to learn on.

I bought it with the 18-55mm kit lens and 55-300mm VR lens. Added a 35mm lens and also have the Tokina 11-16mm ultrawide.
I added a few of the essentials to my order like an spare battery, memory cards, filters, speedlight 400.
I have a bought some books from amazon about my new camera and Digital photography in general so that should keep me busy for a good while.

I want to learn to fully take advantage of the cameras abilities and learn to shoot in "manual'' mode as quickly as possible. My friend has the D5000 and he mostly uses it in auto mode which seems like a bit of a waste to me!

One thing has me concerned the spec sheet on the D5100 has operating temperature 0-40 C. Well, I was planning on shooting the aurora borealis with this, usually its -30 C or colder in the winter. I know the Nikon can handle it as my friend and I have been outside nearly an hour at that temperature and he has had his camera and still takes pictures. I'm just wondering if there is any risk to damage of the camera if subjected to extreme temperatures.

I will have to pick up a sturdy tripod for those aurora shots.

The only thing I might add in the future is an walkaround lens like the 18-105mm or 18-200mm. It will be a lot easier to put that on my camera and slip the 35mm in my bag and just go when I'm going on holidays, then carry around more lenses.

Welcome to the forum.

What an awesome purchase - hope you have someone there to photograph you opening it when it all arrives.

How did you decide on what extra lenses to buy?

Extreme cold weather is hard on batteries, but the one serious issue that you can control is all the condensation moisture when you bring it back into the warm. Don't do that, it's tough on the innards. Standard advice is to to put it into a sealed zip lock bag when outdoors in cold, then bring it in, and DO NOT OPEN IT for at least a couple of hours.

I have everything you listed, to include the D7100. I want to suggest you return the SB400 and jump up a level higher in power. The SB400, you will quickly learn, doesn't have the punch you want. Otherwise, you are set up outstanding.

thanks WayneF for the advice. Well, I don't plan on staying too long otuside in the cold weather...just enough to snap a few shots.
I have been out with my Sony Cybershot point and shoot a few times during winter. Never thought about how it would be affected by the cold...I guess you just take it for granted when you live up here.

Moab Man: so do you still use both the D5100 and D7100. why do you both?
Part of was saying to get the D7100 but I decided I could do more by spending that extra money in a couple extra lenses to start off with so I got the 35mm 1.8g prime and th Tokina wide angle. Looked at the Nikkor wide angles but they are quite a bit more.

So I forgot I had put on my ebay sniping software to bid on an D7000 with 18-105mm kit lens. Anyway, I won the auction for $700USD including shipping to here for a camera with less than 900 actuations.
I wasn't expecting to win so low, but looking at it now not surprised considering the auction ended in the middle of the night. Anyway, I've paid for it and will see if I get it, but now not sure what to do, if I should just keep both camera bodies for now or sell one.

Congrats on the new Nikon! It never hurts to have a back up camera or two! I was considering getting the d5100 too while I save up for full frame Nikon! :D

I think if I sold the D5100 I would take a bit of a loss, because I paid a lot in shipping, customs and taxes when I made my order. Next time I will probably just order from Canada :D I could sell the D7000 here locally but I might like that camera better than my D5100. I think the best option is to keep both and have a 'backup' as you say.
It would be nice if my wife could get interested in photography as well.

Still waiting for the D7000...seems like the seller didn't expect it to go for so low and didn't want to send it to me for that price.

It seems that is what happened: seller didn't want to sell it for so low and isn't going to ship it. I filed the complaint with paypal. This has happened to me before.
Anyway I may just spend the extra $300 and buy a new in box one from a Canadian AD in a few weeks or next month if they still have them in stock. I just prefer how the D7000 feels holding it and layout of the controls. Before I bought my D5100 I didn't have the chance to play with all the cameras side by side to see which one I preferred.

Sorry to hear about your sh*tty seller. Any word back from them? Good on filing the complaint. Have you received a refund yet?

Tapp'n on the go

The seller has not been in communication for a week and they have a week to respond to the claim by providing a tracking number or confirmation of delivery to paypal or I will get a refund.
I'm not too upset though because I bid on it really low and wasn't expecting to win it. Now that I've had the chance to handle the cameras and spend the time with the D7100 in the store I think it will be worth it for me to get one of those...

Update:

seller has had about 6 negative feedbacks this week. Seems no one has been getting there items. Then he responded to the negative feedback saying its paypal's fault because they froze his account!

I am expecting a full refund on Tuesday. I think eventually I'll get a D7100 but with the kit lens 18-140mm; I think it would be a useful lens to have and its a lot cheaper to buy it with the body, but first I'll continue to learn on my D5100 and upgrade my glass before moving up to the D7100.

So I got the full refund for the D7000 and bought a D7100 plus Nikon 16-85mm VR lens on ebay as well but no communication with the seller, no tracking number, and no camera yet and I'm just getting sick of ebay

Why do you buy from Ebay? Why not go to an online dealer and get good service and a good price and no jerks to deal with !!!!!!!!!!
