I don't know about "in between shots some pictures are hazy". But we use flash in darker situations where we need flash. This darker scene makes focus be difficult, somtimes it takes longer. The shutter won't work until it finds focus. When the shutter wont work, notice if the green dot (denoting focus is found) in the bottom left of the viewfinder. It is green when focus is found, and if green, the shutter will work. If not green yet, the shutter will not activate yet. So you are describing a focus problem in dim light. The SB-700 has a red focus assist light on that will help greatly... it lets the camera focus in totally black dark scenes. It is a little tricky getting it to work. Generally, camera must be in AF-S mode, and the central focus point must be selected. Then it working should not be any issue. See page 331 of the D3300 REFERENCE Manual (free at Nikon | Download center | D3300 ) The Reference manual is a much bigger better manual than the little User Manual that ships with the camera. This page 331 is talking about the White focus assist LED on the camera (which does not work with the Flash, but then the better red LED in the flash works). But the rules to getting it to work is the same for both. Try what it says there. Also see SB-700 manual, page E-27
