Nikon D or G type lenses

I use 50mmf1.8D, 85mmf1.8,35mmf1.8G.

My favorite one is 85mmf1.8D.
Except the technical differences between D + G type lenses, the only thing I would like to confirm is that D type lenses have a better quality glass than G lenses.

My experience on the 85mm f1.8D is that it flares easily and the copy that I had was susceptible with purple fringing unlike the G version. I like the bokeh rendition of the G version also but that is just me.

Confirmed glenn. I recently had the chance to try the 85mm D, flared easily when shooting into sources of bright light, purple fringing on high contrast areas as well as green fringing on the bokeh. What I love however about the D lenses is the Retro look and robust feel.

Yup. I forgot about the green tint which is why it had to go.

Not always. I have the 50/1.8 in both the D and G versions. The G is much better.

I hear that a lot Sparky, why do you suppose that is? Do you think it helps that the front element is 58mm instead of 52mm? And what other factors go into it to make the g model better?

I'm no expert in optical design and engineering, but I'd say it's due to better material, design and coatings.
