Nikon Coolpix P600

Any thoughts on using this as a back-up for the D7100?
As I save some money for a full frame.
It will be used mostly for photos of my two grandsons,
Elijah and Jayden. Also for some photos while at the
Horse track.
Its a very light camera.
Thanks

The specs look wonderful, You will have to be very careful shooting with that 60X zoom

4.3-258mm (angle of view equivalent to that of 24-1440mm lens in 35mm [135] format)

Lots of light needed at full zoom.

I would bet this would be a nice carry around camera. With you driving the WiFi might be a nice fast way of sharing photos.

For me I would also consider the sensor size. The P600 is 16MP 1/2.5 sensor. That's pretty standard for Bridge cameras, but tiny even compared to the Nikon CX (J1,V1) sensor size.

Also the max aperture is something like F3.3 on the P600. I dunno. The lenses for the Nikon 1 series are pretty nice, but add whatever lenses you have for the D7100 with a simple adapter. And you can have a serious little kit going. While I doubt you could rival 1440mm, a 300mm lens for your dSLR will reach out to 810mm.

As as to being discontinued....I dunno. It wouldn't bother me really.
