I am a "hobbyist" as well and I will vouch for this lens. Going from a P&S camera to a D7000 was a big step for me. I thought the 18-105 "kit" lens was something I would learn with and outgrow as I got better. Turns out, the better I got the more I liked the lens. From vacation pics at Disney to family pics at Bar-B-Que's I love the versatility and sometimes I got outstanding quality shots, which leads me to believe any issues are operator influenced. Due to budget issues, this was the only lens I had for 15 months. Now I have the 35mm 1.8 for inside/low light and the 70-300mm VR II for my kids sporting events. I take great shots and horrible shots with all lenses equally but the point is I sure do enjoy my equipment.
