Here is my dilemma, Santa has freed up just about enough to buy the Nikon 70-200mm f4. Should I continue to save and purchase the 70-200mm f2.8 or will the F4 do me justice? I will admit that shelling out the money for the 2.8 will be a task but I am all about the spend once philosophy. Thank in advance.[h=1][/h]

I would guess it depends on whether you'll be using it with a teleconverter or not as you'll be sacrificing 1 or 2 stops of light depending on the strength of the converter you'll be using.

Thanks Nikonpup. Am i correct in saying that this lens does not have Image Stabilization?

The Tamron does have VC. When I looked into them I gleaned that the Tamron VC is just as good as if not better than the Nikon's VC. It's a terrific lens for sure and the money you save plus warranty makes it hard to pass it up.

I agree with most everyone above; if I was in the market for a 70-200mm, I'd be buying the Tamron f/2.8 Di VC USD...

No question about it.

Are you staying APS-C (DX)? If so you have the focal length covered with a lot of redundancy no? Really need the f/2.8 with a D7100 for what you shoot?

Looking to go long ? What about the Nikon 300 AF-S f/4 tele? She is next on my list!! Word is add the Nikon 1.4 TC and boom! Prices are plunging now, it was just on Nikon USA refurb the other day for $900 (sold out quick)

Sharp sharp sharp, go read the reviews!!

Just a curve ball for you......from a "I don't like third party glass for no particular valid reason" kinda guy.

BTW Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 have been showing up refurbed quite a bit lately too on Nikon USA.....being patient is key.
(difficult I know esp when dough is in hand and budget police have sanctioned the NAS)

I imagine that i will be DX for years to come. I was looking at the 70-200 because I seem to shoot a good deal of indoor sports and the lighting is no always optimal. I imagine that if I purchased this lens I would sell a lens or two to reduce my redundancy and recoup some of my cost.

Any chance you can demo....?? My LCS has all 3 in stock and I have handled all...(but not the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 tho I did try the previous A mount version and thought it was a slug, much improved in version 2 I am told)

The 70-200 f/4 is one sweet handling lens and according to reviews also takes the Nikon 1.4 TC nicely. I am happy with my cheap 70-300 AF-S VR for the 70-200 range want the 300 and 1.4 TC for shooting surfing and college hoops in a well lit D1 gym.

The Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR II is amazing but it is a beast ......

Demo them all if you can or rent for a week....if you like the handling you will be happy with any of them I am sure!

The 70-200 f4 is a great lens, if you can get by with what you shoot. 1 stop loss of light... well still not so bad again... based on what you are shooting. If indoors in somewhat a fair amount of ambient you may just be able to get away with it. Once again though, I would try and demo/rent the lens first for verification. If you don't mind shooting aftermarket glass, then the Tamron may just fit the bill, their VC on the 70-200 F2.8 is also a great feature. So guess it really ends up being about how much you are willing to sacrifice. Weight vs portability, as the F4 is easier to carry around on the shoulders, and less of a burden if you are shooting in a crowd vs the F2.8 (in any mfgr).

Ha ha ha so true! I used to think Nikon gear was out of reach especially glass! Then I discovered AF D glass, the kit I have assembled for very little money is just astounding!!

This forum and a good trusted LCS (no big box stores for me!) are solid gold. So many people make the most basic of mistakes when a buying frenzy sets in! Getting out and shooting in proximity to Nikon pros has helped me a lot too, most of the pros I have been shooting surf with love to talk gear and give their opinions, that is what got me on to the Nikon 300 AF-S f/4!! It is all a fun learning process of which this forum is a key ingredient!

Good luck and let me know what you end up snagging! Don't forget the Nikon AF D 80-200 2.8 if you want to keep the budget down to be able to buy more glass! I have a buddy who has the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR 1 which I have shot with too and like a lot.

So many choices, at so many price points. Go forth my friend and demo! The D7100 with anything we've discussed will be amazing!

Happy holidays!

If I was going to spend $1500 or more on a lens I'd stick with Nikon and not buy anything else period, but that's only my opinion folks.
