Hi all,

First time poster here, but have been enjoying reading the threads for some time.

I've taken delivery of my new 55-200mm dx vr lens today and am after a bit of advice from others who may have this lens already.

When focussing I am getting a slight grating/ grinding sound from within the lens. it's nothing major to hear, but my 18-55 dx vr lens doesn't give the same sound, so I was wondering if it was anything I should be concerned about?

I can't decide whether it's the autofocus it the vr function that's causing it.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Thanks!

I have the same lens and have never felt/heard anything like that form it. If it is new then I would call whoever you got it from ASAP and tell them that you want a replacement fast.

Thanks. I've updated profile now.

I assumed that all I'd hear was the auto focus motor and that would be a similar sound to my 18-55 kit lens?

I had a D3100 with 18-55 & 55-200 for almost a year, I sold them a few months ago to fund my D7100.
My 55-200 was no noisier than the 18-55. both were very quiet in fact.

My 55-200 would make a sound but not a grating or grinding sound. It was the VR activating; that is normal. Focusing was absolutely silent. Try turning the VR off, and see if sound goes away.

Still does it with vr turned off, so sounds more like auto focus motor.

As it is 'SWM' as is my 18-55, I would expect it to sound the same? Having watched from the front of the camera last night it seems to be the final 'fine tuning' of the focussing. Incidentally, doesn't seem to be a sound when in manual focus.

The VR in my 18-55 does not make any noise, that I can hear. It sounds like you need to have the 55-200 checked. Once repaired, I think you will like it.

yes, definitely sounds like the focus motor is the problem, shouldn't here much of anything.
