I used a 50mm f/1.8 on a crop, and it wasn't quite sharp enough for my taste, but I often liked the background with it.
My suggestion is to get the 35mm; 40mm is too close to the 50mm.
Why would you use a 50mm lens on crop...? They are made for a FF. Or just someone else correct me if I am wrong.

If you're looking for a dedicated macro lens on a budget, I'm a pretty big fan of my 105mm 2.8 AI-S. It's completely manual, but that has helped me learn more about my camera and manual focusing than I would have otherwise. I've tested the new 105mm VR and while the autofocus was handy, I found that I still did minor manual focus adjusting anyway.
The lens will fit your camera body but it will be a fully manual lens. You will not be able to auto-focus OR meter through the lens. You will get focus confirmation, via the confirmation "dot", but everything else will be up to to you... Including setting the correct exposure.I'm a complete newbie and I'm looking for a budget macro lens so this post caught my eye. Will this lens work on a D3200? I don't mind if it is completely manual, as you say that is a good way to learn and I'd have more pride in the end result. I just want to make sure that it fits and is capable of getting good shots of butterflies and bees etc.?
Where would you be likely to see fungus? Growing on the glass itself. I will keep my eyes peeled for one of these used, new is certainly out of my price range for the time being.
