Nikon 18-200 Bad focus at wide angle - Please help

Myth

Recently I bought a 18-200 VR ED used to pair with my D7000. I did some testing during the purchase but could not perform anything extensive at the time of my purchase. My bad. Recently I observed out of focus on the wide angle specificall the between 18 to 50mm. So, I performed a test mounting D7000 on tripod with VR off and focussing through Live View at different focal length. I kept the ISO and shutter speed constant and used remote to avoid shake with AF - S center focus setting. Attaching shots taken at various focal length. Please help, do I need AF fine tuning. Is there a problem at these focal length or my technique is flaw? I see the letters are not sharp and blurry at 18, 24, 35 and improving after 50mm. Any help and your feed back is appreciated.

I don't think this would cause it but your aperture changed from F5.6 to F3.5 in your tests...

Try it again With your aperture at F8 to see if the shorter focused ones are clearer...

I was 2 feet away from the subject. So expected the 3.5 to be sharp at the 18mm and so on. I will try F8 and share the experience.

Posted the image that is taken at F8 18mm. Unless something wrong with my eyes..they are not sharp. I understand the ISO was way high. I am not too worried about that but wondering if there is a Back/Front focus problem on it.

I would suggest you try fine tuning AF and testing it. Its going to give you better results than asking forum users to guess.
Then test it on another camera, and test another lens on your camera.
and if the problem seems limited to your one new lens, get it sent away for a fix.
