Nikkor vs Canon among the Press

I was looking at the stitched picture of the Inaugaral,,, and panned over to the Press viewing stage, LOTS of huge TelePhotos..

and ..

From my observation,, seemed to be about 3 or 4 Nikons per Canon. So,, looks like Nikon might be rebuilding Market Share among this group.

and those huge Zooms and Tele,, except for maybe renting one,, don't ever see one of those baby's in my collection (5-10K).

Nikon is still number 2 when it comes to DSLRs and lenses. I think it will be this way for a long time to come. I just don't see Nikon advertising as much as Canon. Even when i go to the futureshop website, Canon are the first DSLRs that you usually see. Anyhow, what does it all mean aside from people buying more Canon? Not much. Both companies make good products and both products take great pictures.

The main reason Canon is so much more prevalent among pro shooters is because Canon embraced full frame years ahead of Nikon. Many current Canon shooters were once hard core Nikon users but made the change to get into the FX bodies. Nikon really misread the public's desire for full frame bodies and is doing everything they can to win back those former Nikon shooter.

I have to admit, I've always found Canon bodies a little nicer, but at the same time, I love Nikkor lenses more.
And Nikon are certainly catching up on the 'good looks' of their bodies.

As mentioned already, just look at the amateur photogrpahy market - Canon go all out to promote their P&S gear and it's a natural progression for people to look to Canon then for their more advanced requirements.
I'm not saying Nikon doesn't, but just not as much of a marketing machine as Canon is.

Take a look at Canon's marketing material - their product brochure is a beast of useful info compared to what Nikon produce.
In fact Canon's is more of an informative booklet, whereas Nikon tend to be more brochure based.

But at the end of the day, its all down to personal choice, and if we hadn't made the choices we had, a lot of us would be over on 'Canonites' :p

Hmmm, that seems just the opposite of what I've seen, if in fact you're saying Nikon outnumbers Canon 3-4:1. Canon has been a force among full time news photographers for decades, and I can't imagine that changing since most of the are shooting with company equipment. I know I'm seeing SO much Canon glass at every football game I watch that it's hard to imagine the numbers you suggest. Perhaps they're making inroads in with the stringers and part-time folks, and with the pros outside the news world - which is great!!

Well, maybe this is where Canon went right. What I'm saying is that we see them more because they are WHITE lenses that stick out more… The black Nikons are less visible than the Canon. So it's very difficult to know for sure what the actual real numbers are. One thing I know is that when you get to a certain level of exposure as a pro photographer, companies will literally give out their products for exposure alone.

I know this as I used to shoot Canon for the Montreal olympic games in 1976. I could get anything I wanted from them.

While the white lenses helps them stand out, what it really comes down to is the Canon Professional program and the way they work with their network of pros. Need something? There's someone nearby that will get it to you if available, and ASAP. And even if Nikon is willing to do the same, Canon has been doing it for as long as I can remember, so all Nikon has done is to meet them half way. That's no knock on Nikon, just major kudos to Canon for their level of service.

I agree with the FX strategy. Couple that with fantastic zoom lenses and National Geographic and Canon took the lead. But it wasn't so long ago that the Pulitzers were routinely won using Nikon equipment.
