I didn't because someone help me make the decision to buy new!lol;)
I'm shocked that Bill didn't jump on this comment! ;)

Out of the 3 zoom lenses I own (wide, normal, and tele), I use the 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G the least. In all honesty, I think you'd use the 24-70mm more frequently than a wide angle zoom. And there are times I want an outdoor shot where I need to use my telephoto zoom. An example is when there is a large body of water between me and the trees on the opposite side of its banks. So the 18-35mm isn't fully weather sealed. Either use a rain jacket over the camera/lens combo, or leave the wide angle zoom home and take other lenses. Think of the money you'd save as well as having the benefit of using screw-on front filters.

Since I don't want to hijack Marcel's 365-thread, if you have a response, Bill, would you do it in one of your own? And now back to your regularly scheduled programming of Marcel's Marvelous Moments! :)

I'm afraid I am still stuck on my original choice, and I am pretty deturmanded to get that lens my friend! As far as what I will use most, I just don't know since I have seen some very cool shots using a ultra wide angle lens in ways I never considered! Anyway the lens I'm not so sure which version to get is the 70-200mm!;)

I just got a 14-24mm F/2.8, in "needs repair" condition. I'm doing the repair myself. (Yes, I can do that. I've repaired lenses with much worse damage.)

I can tell you that the construction of the 14-24mm is pretty robust. I would be inclined to say that if you got one that's in good working shape when it came into your hands, it's likely to remain in good working shape as long as it doesn't get dropped on a hard surface. So I'd say that saving money and buying on the used market should be really just fine, as long as you get a guaranteed right of return in the event of a problem. I've seen good examples go for a bit under 1000 dollars on ebay.

Another nice thing about that lens is that once you know your way around them, they're among the easier lenses to get into and repair. MUCH faster and easier than the Nikkor 80-400mm (first generation) that I repaired recently.

I got my 14-24, the parts I needed to fix it arrived a few days later, and after spending some time working with it including identifying what has been bent or tweaked from when it was originally damaged, and compensating for that damage by straightening parts and polishing some parts in sliding contact with others, the lens is together and running flawlessly. After doing the autofocus fine tune procedure, it's so sharp the photos will cut you!

For the moment this has become my main lens. And now I can cover the range from 14mm to 600mm. Or 950 if I put my Tamron 150-600 on one of my DX Nikon D200s. I'm not sure that I don't need to get a 10.5mm fisheye lens, though. I just might want one at the right price.

Taken with the 14-24, 2 second exposure under half moonlight. I am really enjoying playing around with night photography to get a rather unique look to common places and things.

I've now had about a month with the 14-24 lens and I have to say it's my favorite. It is my daily use lens, usually to be found on my D800. I find myself finding ways to compose a shot just for this lens. Oh, sure, there are reasons to use other lenses but what this one does is always really COOL.

Thanks. I'll be sure to send my wife your way when she's disgruntled because I've bought another lens ... :D
