Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 ED VR II + TC-20E III Teleconverter??

I'm wondering about peoples' experiences with this 2x teleconverter used with this lens? I'm wondering specifically about image quality: is it degraded at all by using this TC? And there is a 2-stop reduction, correct? Would the 1.4x or 1.7x TC be better and if so, why? If there's already another thread about this, please let me know.

I have seen this question many times and from what i can gather the 2x gives an unacceptable loss of IQ for most people,i do wonder though if they have re tuned the focus for the converter,the 1.4 seems to give minimal IQ loss or in some members opinion none,the 1.7 mostly gets the reply you may as well use a 1.4 and crop as the IQ will be the same.
Sorry its not user knowledge but i have followed a few threads in different places on the subject.

I attached my TC20E to my Tam 70-200mm and to my 300mm prime (also to my 200mm micro) and in all three cases the quality was crap.

Crap evidently is very subjective.

Also keep in mind that every lens is different and a TC doesn't necessarily "improve" anything. If you have a lens that needs serious fine-tuning, it is entirely possible a TC pushes her down the cliff.

I have the TC14E II and its superb i can't see any reduction in the IQ on both my micro 105mm or my 80-400mm .

I have read lots of reviews on the TC20E II and like the posts here say it comes out very poorly.


That said apparently the TC20E III is a lot better.

I've been interested in teleconverters since the mid-90s when I first got into 35mm SLRs, but the same advice I got then seems to apply now. Any TC is a trade off between IQ and focal length. In addition to losing light by adding the TC, the extra elements in the TC were not designed as part of the original lens design and consequently negatively impact the IQ. The IQ hit seems to be less noticeable on the 1.4 TC, but becomes more apparently with the 1.7 TC and really impacts the 2.0 TC. Each time I've looked, I always end up walking away from the TC in favor of getting the appropriate lens with the focal length needed.

I have this combo, Nikon 70-200 and TC 2.0 III.

Here is one shot that came to mind, I will say the conditions being right the combo can give good results.

Now with that said I feel for the most part the 1.4 or 1.7 would be better, but if don't pixel peep and take the photo in as a whole the 2.0 will surprise you.
