The AUTO setting is grayed out.

I presume I altered something else that has caused this - It's usually my fault :moody:

You need to switch your camera out of "auto" mode and use something like "P" or "A". While in "auto" the ISO is already in auto mode.

Thanks

The manual is the first place to go to find out what is going on. What has probably happened is that you have it in AUTO mode. Switch it to Program and the ISO setting will be active again. AUTO should not be your first choice in shooting modes. IF you want the camera to choose setting for you then Program is a better choice.

Through the menu, set your shortcut button (under flash one on the left side) to be the ISO control. Makes everything much easier later on.

Thanks for the prompt responses, it's appreciated. Unfortunately, I still cannot set 'AUTO' in the ISO sensitivity settings. (and to confirm - I am in 'P' mode)

A more important ISO topic to consider is the way that the camera handles ISO adjustment when you enable Auto ISO:
  • Auto ISO in the fully automatic exposure modes: In Auto, Auto Flash Off, andScene modes, the camera selects the ISO for you, but doesn't go up any higher than ISO 1600.
  • Auto ISO in P, S, A, and M modes: Auto ISO doesn’t appear on the ISO settings list, but you can enable Auto ISO as sort of a safety net. Here’s how it works: You dial in a specific ISO setting. If the camera decides that it can’t properly expose the image at that ISO given your current aperture and shutter speed, it automatically adjusts ISO as necessary.

You might want to reset the Shooting Menu Options by using the reset option... As you can see from the manual, the setting of AUTO is only available in the 3 modes, and is NOT available in the selective modes...

Thanks. That explains it.

Must remember this.

Took some research and playing with my D5100 But the only time it gets set to AUTO is when it is in one of the SCENE modes and then it gets set to AUTO Automatically.

Other modes you set the min / max and auto in the secondary position and go from there.
