Ok here goes, newb question number one.
Just bought myself a new D3100 with the kit lense.A new Af-S 55-200,and have a 35mm prime on the way.Im looking to buy a hotshoe flash and im lost as to what to get?
My main interest is outdoor and nature type photos, sunsets, storms, landscapes, wildlife type etc..
I will be doing some portraits and indoor stuff at family gatherings but not my main focas. Can i get by with an SB-400 or should i just get something like the 700?

SB-400 would only work well if you used an off camera TTL cable and get the flash off camera. Same with the SB-700 however, the SB-700 utilizes Nikon CLS creative lighting system and can be fired off camera, remotely, using the Nikon Commander feature. No wires!

The SB700 will provide for all your needs..
That is definitely a good place to start..
if you looking at lower budget & don't mind thrid party you can go for the Yongnuo 565 EX.. excellent flash at a very low cost..

Bounce and bounce features (including decent power) is pretty important for any walk-around work indoors, but bounce is not of much use outdoors (no ceiling).
Any flash isn't going to do much for sunsets, storms, landscapes - distances are too great, and flash is only correct exposure at some one distance anyway. The most flash could do is light some foreground stuff (but that is a use for them). A flash can help for wildlife, fill in sun or birds in dark trees, etc, but distances are relatively far, and again, you need all the power you can get. I think your use needs more than the SB-400, and it is discontinued anyway.
