New York Times Exposes Peter Lik Photography Fraud - artnet News

So, remember that guy who took the most expensive photograph in history? Seems the NYT did some digging on him and found some interesting results. Personally I don't care if it's true or not, but it made for an interesting read. Plus, after seeing some of this guy's quotes I wouldn't be surprised if it was true. Just thought I'd share it with you guys.

Not sure where "fraud" comes in. The guy makes his money selling prints. If you are a real "art collector", you most likely will not buy a Peter Lik. But, if you are just getting into that "hobby"; well, i suppose you better do your homework. It's called capitalism and if you don't like it, Cuba's pretty nice all year round. I suggest the author of this article be careful in what they say, especially about how much he has really sold. The NYT has only checked a website that keeps track of auction sales, not sales from his 15 galleries. I really don't see a problem in what he is doing. "Fraud" is a strong word and the author has no proof of this. If they do, they should alert the authorities. Though, i doubt that will ever happen.

If none is buying, none would be selling.

It says a lot more about people that pay for art but there's nothing happening that isn't occurring in every other artistic department. If I remember well, Warhol as an example also worked in "limited" series. Even expensive car manufacturers exploit this trick.

I read the articles yesterday as well. Seems like pure speculation.
Say what you want, his model sells prints apparently :)

If it was actual fraud I'm sure the authorities would already know by now. This guy hasn't exactly been keeping a low profile and the amount of money he's supposedly making would guarantee at least a few eyes watching him and not just from people looking for fraud. lol

If they are lying about the big sale, how is that 'fraud'? Nobody is twisting people's arms to pay so much for a print :)

I think calling him a "fraud" is a little over the top (based on what I just read). It sounds like he's learned how to market his work rather successfully and, again based on what I just read, I don't see any laws being "bent" much less broken. Did I miss that part?

Lastly, do the words caveat emptor ring a bell with anyone else?

The personal vitriol from the writer towards Lik is so over the top I'm wondering if at some point they had crossed as children and Lik gave the author a super wedgie on the playground and he has never got over it.
