Hi everyone just saying hi from gold coast australia!
im getting my D5100 in about 2 weeks time! im so excited to get my hands on it!
dose anyone have any tips theyd like to share with me? ill be shooting pretty much everything! esp night time and photos of my one year old :)

Hi it's a great camera :) I love mine , and as for tips this site is a hub of information so I am sure you will learn heaps as have at nikonites !

Hi & welcome....A couple of weeks to do some reading and research...You maybe able to download a manual from the Nikon site

Youtube is a great learning tool

Welcome, hope you enjoy Nikonites as much as I do! I also have a D5100 and shoot everything!! I have found it performs well it most all conditions. Any limitations are the result of the Operator (me)

Since the default "Sharpness" setting for the D5100 is so low, I'm going to suggest you adjust it right off the bat. I know doing so made a really big difference in the image quality I got out of my D5100. Until I made this adjustment my images were always looking really soft.

To adjust this setting do the following:

Press MENU.
Select SHOOTING MENU (camera icon on left).
Click right (into the menu selections) and go down to the next page to: SET PICTURE CONTROL.
Click right again to get into the four standard options then click down to STANDARD (might be called "NORMAL", I forget which).
With "NORMAL" selected, click right again and you'll find sub-menus for adjusting lots of things like Brightness, Hue, etc. within the "NORMAL" selection.

The only thing I suggest you adjust here is the SHARPNESS setting, which will be set on something like -2. Bump that setting up to +7 and press "OK" to save the adjustment.
