Hello Everyone,

My name is Shannon and I have been taking photos for a little over a year. I have always loved to take pictures but my passion is sport shots, my boyfriend and our amazing group of friends race in FTR (Florida Trail Riders) and we have some friends that ride MX tracks. I am really new and I am hoping to learn how to use what I have and go from there. I currently have everything on auto and I am interested in learning how to take night shots. All my night action shots come out blurry.

I currently have a Nikon D5000, with a AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED lens, A AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G, and I have a Sigma EF-810 DG Super NA-iTTL flash

Shannon, Welcome to Nikonites! You will find this a very and friendly place to visit and so many people willing to help. Later, if you post up a couple pics you are having trouble with and at least the ISO, F and S numbers.. there will be people here to help. Action night shots are tough as you need lots of light for night (read slow shutter) and speed to stop the action (read FAST shutter..)

Enjoy!

Shannon, welcome to Nikonites.

If you're using your 55-200 for action shots, set your camera to S (shutter Priority) and make sure you're shooting at least 1/500th of a second. Set the F stop to f/8 or f/11. During the day, your ISO should be at 100 or 200 (depending on your camera). Shooting at night, you bump the ISO higher to capture more light.

Thank you for the info Jack I will try that at the next event. I do use my 55-200 when taking the action shots. Right now since I am new I have every thing on auto but I will change that. I am so glad my boyfriend told me about this site, and thank you for your response :)
