New Sigma 24-70 2.0 rumor

I've got the current 24-70mm f2.8 and it's an incredibly sharp lens. DxOMark scores were very high on both the D600 and D800. I don't know why I'd need anything brighter. I'll be very curious to see the price point on this one.

Oh, and if anyone is interested, the f2.8 is still for sale. :) I'm a big fan of VR/OS and like the Nikon 24-70mm I'd rather wait for one with that feature, so ping me if'n your interested.

With Tamron having introduced a quality rival already, and now this news from Sigma which sounds awesome, it makes me wonder what Nikon's replacement will be when they release something new. With this switch to a faster aperture, will Nikon counter with something similar? Hmmm..... Will be interesting to hear what transpires! Thanks for the info, Rick! :D

I think when it comes to 24-70's, Nikon and the third parties are in a perpetual game of leap frog now. Tamron and Sigma have always nipped at Nikon's heals with low cost alternatives. Now Tamron ups the anti with VC and a very sharp lens, giving them an "angle". Sigma's trying to carve out a niche with a 2.0, something the other two won't have. It will be up to Nikon to jump after sigma and drop the axe on them with a new pro standard. I"m sure it takes some time for Nikon to feel any sales reduction, but these two will bite into the market more vigorously than before. Nikon will still grab the majority of the FT pros, but with Fx going down in price, there's going to be a lot more buyers for third party pro alternatives. This is where Nikon may once again miss the boat if they don't respond.

I'm interested. I first saw mention of this about a month or so ago. Sigma have been releasing some very nice lenses of late, and I'm hopeful this one will be the same. But, we probably won't be seeing it until 2015. One thing about the Nikon 24-70 that bugs me is when shooting at 24mm, which I tend to do most with that type of lens. At 24mm, the lens barrel is fully extended and the lens hood does not extend with the inner barrel itself. Only speaking for myself here, but I'd prefer no extension at 24mm & a lens hood that actually moves with the barrel (especially when shooting in the rain).
