New Nikon 58mm f1.4 Announced tonight?

I don't see myself spending that much money for a normal lens. Some might be enticed but for that price, I would have expected a f1.2 for that price range.

Yikes, I didn't see that price in my mind's eye! It is also a weird lens length and not much gain over the trad 50mm. I don't get it but luckily I have more sense than money, sorry Nikon no deal! :eek:Kathleen

The focal length makes no sense to me and the price?

I wish they would work on some wide primes, like an updated 20mm.

The science of Nikons pricing strategy. Take one dart board. Circle it with a bunch of silly prices on strange focal lengths. Throw dart. Price set.

I wouldn't mind if the IQ matched the price as far as Nikon pro primes. But looking at the 24 and 35 1.4's, price is way above IQ, they should be much better or cheaper. They may have been the best at release, but their issues stand out more now. This is what drove me to the sigma 35 1.4, better IQ than the Nikon at 1/3 price. From now on I will scrutinize each lens and not buy solely by brand. BTW, 1.4 is hard enough to shoot with, 1.2, in my opinion, will require manual focus and tripod most of the time. Obviously this is a specialty lens, but convenience can be important too,

I guess a new focal length is a good thing. I wouldn't get another 50 having a 35, too close for me. Why not just make it a 60?

What makes this lens unique is that most lenses perform their best about two stops down from wide open. Typically fast lenses are not very good when shot wide-open. They tend to have terrible falloff (vignetting), an overall lack of sharpness and increased abberations. This lens, like its predecessor the 58mm f/1.2 Noct-Nikkor, is supposed to perform equally well wide-open as it does stopped-down.

At $1,700, this lens is a bargain compared to the $3k-$3.5k that used 58mm f/1.2 Noct-Nikkors are selling for.

On a DX body the equivalent focal length of 87mm should make this lens an outstanding choice for portraits.
