New lens decision? Help please!

Hi

Now I have my 150-600, I want to change my 18-300 to a better walkabout lens. I've narrowed down to the following

Nikon 16-85
Nikon 16-80
Nikon 17-55
Sigma 17-70
Tamron 17-50

The 16-80 is brand new and high priced but I'm tempted by a fixed 2.8 lens. 17-55s can be had second hand very reasonably but they are a tank. I've no experience of the Sigma or Tamron though.

The other issue will be I'll have nothing to cover 55-150....

How about keeping the 18-300 and getting a 35mm 1.8 prime? Cheap and very good IQ.

I used the Nikon 17-55 2.8 when I shot only DX and liked it alot. It is built like a tank, which to me is a good thing. To my eyes, it's comparable to the FX 24-70 2.8, which is my most used lens.

I owned the Tamron 17-50 which is a nice lens however, for a walkaround I feel it would sometimes be a bit short. The option of VC is also a nice touch enabling you to get the shot at slower shutter speeds. The Nikon 17-55 is a workhorse lens and a touch heavy for a walk around.

Depending on your body format, maybe going with a 18-140 on dx, or a 24-120 f4/(or f3.5-5.6 variable aperture) fx/dx may be a better option.

Thanks for the advise, decided to go for a second hand 17-55. Seems to be a great lens although heavy. Hopefully I've got a good copy, most on eBay were pretty poor.

I will have to see if I miss 55 to 150 as I can't afford another lens at the money, especially as I've stumped up £600 on a sigma 150-600.

Why not keep your 18-300 until you have the money?
