Hi to all , I am a new owner of a D7000 coming over to Nikon from the Dark side Cann0n EOS world. I look forward to picking your brains and learning all I can from this well of knowledge. I was a little worried about using off camera flash equipment with this camera but after a little study here I have not a thing to worry about . Thanks for that

Welcome to Nikonites! Congrats on that new camera, it is a fine piece of equipment. Lots of folks here using it so plenty of help available so don't hesitate to ask.

What I suggest is: just shoot in fully automatic mode to start, then gradually, as you cover features and settings in the manual, start moving away from fully auto.

There is no place like 127.0.0.1

the main thing to remember is that if you change a setting whist in say P mode that only applies in P and you will have different settings in A ......no not A auto ..dont even bother with that stick to P to start with .
Cameras usually supplied soft ...check you have sharpness on +9 and are shooting large .....compression does not affect picture quality ..I have 40,000 wedding photos in large /basic this year ..no problems

Thanks for all the good advice. I did some playing around in the scene modes last night and also in auto and P , Ia little in M. When I was using the Cannon I shot mostly in Manual and in Raw. (Raw mode not in the Raw) I think I am really going to like this camera. It has all the features the cannon did pulse a lot more . I see it does not have a B & W setting but as I usualuy shoot manual and Raw it does not matter because raw captures everything and when converted to B& W makes for far better contras and tone. I hope to be gettine started on a couple of table top projects and start one on small towns soon.

starting to get a little experience with mine now..my advice, get U1 and U2 locked in as soon as you can, they are a better fallback than auto or scene..for an example of settings, take a look at Ken Rockwell's recommendations, U1 for landscapes etc. and U2 for people!
