I decided that the 18-105 just wasn't going to cut it for my beginning requirements. I love motorsport and we'll be going to lots of events this year on onwards I hope. So for the time being, I've changed to a new 18-300 VR (the new version). Seems really nice and takes great photos. It's also highlighted that I really need a grip for my big old plate hands. So managed to get a genuine one from eBay for £100 and also got a second battery coming also.
