Ok so I got my new d5100 in the mail 2 days ago and have been going though the menus on it and reading and watching YouTube videos but what I'm needing is a guide for beginners in photography that explains everything and helps set up test shots so I can see how to use the various settings. I have no experience with cameras except point and shoot in auto mode i would like to learn a lot more any suggestions would be great.

I've only been using a DSLR for a few months now, and I found that Google is your best friend.
There is unlimited information, tutorials, websites ,youtube videos, reviews and such that it boggles the mind.

The one website that I really like is Digital Photography School - Digital Photography Tips and Tutorials
Easy to understand tutorials for beginners and a little more advanced alike.
Also this place right here is awesome for information as well.

The one thing I like to do, is when I'm reading posts here, and I don't understand something, I'll just google. Enjoy your new expensive hobby and welcome to Nikonites!

2 good people on YouTube that have lots of videos and explain things really well are Tony Northrup and Anthony Morganti. I actually bought Tony Northrup's book and love it. It comes with tons of video links and tips.

I apologize for an error on my first reply. Anthony Morganti discusses Photoshop Elements. He is very good if you choose to use that photo editing software. Tony Northrup discusses actual picture taking scenarios.

Tommy I found Jared Polin good - like his non pushy, informative style (but not necessarily his hair style :D - but that is his trademark)
I promote his products as an affiliate of his.

Aside from Tony N. and Fro... I would also say you can check out Kelbyone.com for photography courses and they do have books from composition, lighting, beginner and everything in between.

Welcome to Nikonites.
I've found that all the books and videos can be a bit overwhelming. This site is great for answering your questions. Don't be afraid to ask even the most basic question. People are here to help. We've all been there.
While using the books and videos is ok, use them as a starting point. The one thing that I've found most helpful is to just go out and shoot. Play with all the settings. See how the camera reacts. Take lots of pictures. Lots. Experiment. Have fun!!

I went to a meet up this morning to get a refresher on some basics, was a 2.5hr class on ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed with practical exercises to do - adds a totally new dimension to learning about your camera.

For what it's worth, I just finished reading Darrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon D7100". I'm pretty sure he has a book for every Nikon out there. I found it to be very helpful with simple explanations and examples for everything the camera offers. He breaks the camera features down to get you set up and shooting in no time. It definitely helped me switch from a D5000 to the 7100.
