My new D3300

Did some bursts to see how many shots I will get. The camera stopped at 10 shots in NEF mode, which is about what the manual claims. If I want longer bursts then I should probably shoot jpeg as that gives me a 100 shot buffer.

The on camera flash is still giving me metering problems. Indoors with matrix mode metering it is 2EV below (hence requires 2EV flash compensation). In bright sunlight it is just the opposite, requiring -2EV flash compensation. I have yet to figure out what setting will give me proper exposures with the on camera flash.

I just came back from messing around with this camera and the d5300 at a local camera shop. Both had the newer 18-55 lens. I was really impressed with the clarity and sharpness. Focus seemed dead on. Both cameras seem to be the same as far as iq. Now that Melville NY has my d600 instead of LA... And may have it for a while if they don't replace it... I might have to purchase this 3300. It was actually quite fun picking it up and putting it in P and M and just shooting

Tried recovering blown highlights in RAW

Recovered. Though some areas are still blown, most of the relevant area is recovered. There is at least 1EV of margin at the high end. Another method of looking at this is that the meter and the in camera histogram are both set at -1EV from the maximum.

Another new thing learnt. Why you should not use very high capacity SD cards.

In my thought process the bigger the card capacity the better. Little did I realise the pit falls of "Too Large" a capacity. I bought a 32GB 45mbps card as I felt that the 4GB class 4 card was too small and too slow. So I am using the 32 GB card. Here are the down sides
. When importing the images, once the number of images crosses 200, the listing of directory takes time. Today with over 820 (about 16GB) images in my car the listing took five minutes. With less than 200 images it is practically instantaneous.
. The camera has become slow. It crawls. Where as in general there was no time lag in shutter actuation, once the number of images crossed 400 it slowed down and today with 700+ imanges on the card the shutter would actuated after more than 3 seconds after pressing the button.

In short, a 16GB or better an 8GB card would be optimum size. I have a feeling that Nikon has crippled the D3300 so that a professional would go for a more expensive body. Here is what I feel has been deliberately crippled
. Though the processor is same as that in D5300, the response is slow
. The ISO 100 and ISO 200 have same DR. The DR at ISO 100 should have been same as in D5300 and D7100.
. Non CPU lenses do not meter, while in higher end bodies they do.
