Late to the thread but I'm in the same boat. Struggled with weight most of my life, but kept it off with diet and exercise until I got back up to 240 lbs in my forties ( a lot for 5' 6"). Hit the booze hard for years after I lost my daughter, empty carbs really pack it on! A couple years ago I lost 60 lbs on a low carb diet and exercise. I avoided all grains/rice/pasta/bread/pasta for about 4 months. Once I hit my goal I allowed myself to have a carb item at 1 meal a day. I kept it off for over a year, but then I got lazy and carbs slipped back in. I gained back 40lbs. So now I'm 51, back at 220 and need to get down to 170. Started back on the low cabs and exercise last week and I'll weigh in Monday. Low carb worked great for me, although it's not always convenient. I just started the runtastic app which tracks all kinds of exercise and gives a lot of data feedback. It also automatically posts your results to FB if you want, which I have found is somewhat motivational. I feel obligated to post an exercise activity each day. I'll continue here too for even more accountability :).
