My 70-200 VRII died! :(

Bought the lenses only two months ago. Was at a wedding (thankfully as a guest) and it seemed to be fine. Suddenly just stopped pulling focus. It was really weird. I didn't bang it anywhere or anything of that nature. I tried again the following day and it just refused to auto-focus. Anyone had any similar experiences?

It has been sent back to Nikon and I am waiting to hear back. The guy at the shop says he has never seen one die like that. Sort of crappy for a pro lens that costs the same as a kidney in some countries!

Ask for a specific report on what was wrong with the lens and what might have caused it (not just, "we fixed the motor"). Is it electronic, caused by vibration, humidity, what. I'm contemplating this lens so would like to know if there are any potential problems.

Thanks for this info. With the numbers of people using the D800, I think a few people are bound to have this issue. Makes even less sense since it is a G lens and doesn't use the camera motor to focus.

I have used the 50mm 1.4g on the body much more often and thankfully no issues yet.

Will do. I doubt it is humidity since the lens is so new and had always been packed away appropriately. I think I just got a faulty AF motor. Hopefully they fix it soon!

I don't think the D800 has anything to do with. I have over 6000 actuations on my D800 & used my 70-200Vr & 300mmf4 for 90% of those with no problems. Just bad luck on that lens

I always get nervous when I have to take things back to a shop or claim a warranty. I'm worried they will come back and somehow blame it on me...even though I've done nothing wrong lol. Its been 8 days since the Nikon dealer sent it in for "priority" service...no news yet.

Do you guys think there's any chance they will just replace it? I would hate to have an issue a year from now once my warranty ends (1 year warranty in Australia) after they claim to have 'fixed' it

I don't doubt it's not in the camera, but I just found it an odd coincidence that 3 similar stories popped up involving a D800 in 3 or 4 months.
