Moving original files from Aperture to external HD

I have been culling my photos mercilessly in an effort to free up my internal hard drive on my iMac , but it is getting to the stage where I need to move them to an external HD.
I am no computer guru, so I am a little unsure if I am doing this correctly.
I have read where I need to create a referenced library externally from my computer.

I have started to relocate some original raw files into folders I have created on an external HD.
Can anyone tell me, now that I have relocated the originals to the external HD, are the photos that remain in Aperture just thumbnails that wont take up much space ?
I have read where if you have the thumbnails in Aperture, you can just click on them to access the original file that is stored on the external HD.
This sounds like an ideal situation, if it is in fact what is happening.

If anyone shed can some light on this, it would be much appreciated.

Hi Brad,

Basically, if you move your .nef files to an external HD, you may as well
transfer the whole thing to the same place. The next time you launch your
app., Aperture or else, it will ask you where the library is (and eventually
the files) and no damage done!

Personally, I hate the library system. This is why, after studying Apple's,
Adobe's and other's solutions, I opted for a danish software that, since
then, made me happy. Incidentally, with their latest version, the Danes,
to attract those comfortable with the lib system, offer:

1. to work with or without them (lib),
2. should you make the move they hope you will, their app. will recognize
the "others' libs" and leave them untouched to start working with its own!

I hope I was of some help!

An unrepentant MAC user that is very happy not to be alone on this forum…

Have a good day…

Hi Kodiac, thanks for the reply.
So if I go with the files totally on the external HD, is there anything I need to do with the thumbnails that are left in aperture, or do I just delete them ?

I am happy to be a Mac user, I think there are quite a few of us around.

What do you mean "the thumbnails that are left in Aperture"?
Apeture is an app., it contains nothing else but itself! Take everything photo related
into a new folder (give it a name like Phototheque or else)
and copy it your new HD. Then put the original in bin and leave it there!

Start APERTURE, upon request tell it where to find that new folder and proceed as usual.
When you are shure that everything is working fine, then, AND ONLY THEN, will you be
happy to empty the trash bin!

Have a good day…
