You can't go wrong with a Manfrotto monopod. Worth every penny....and I'm cheap as they come! :)

You might also consider the Benro line of monopods. Do a Google on these.

Another vote for Manfrotto. I've got the 680b as well. I use the 234RC head. I find that ball heads on monopods don't make quite as much sens unless you both do a lot of tilting forward/back and shifting from horizontal to vertical. In a given situation I'm usually doing one or the other and will set the bottom plate appropriately - with the forward "LENS" arrow pointing 90 degrees to the lens if I need to quickly shift the camera orientation, or as posted if I need to adjust the camera horizontally to the horizon. Works great that way if you're up high and need to shoot down (shooting out a window or over the rail of an arena).

I have the Sirui P-326 that is lightweight, compact and fits your budget. It has a retractable spike which worked well when I used it in snow. Great for video use also if the footprint doesn't allow the use of a tripod. It can accommodate 1/4 or 3/8 inch thread such as your ballhead for your tripod which is what I use.

With the leg fully extended, the measurement to the base plate with no camera mounted is 65 1/2"... add the camera and at 6'3", I don't have to squat down to look through the viewfinder.

per google you have a number of camera stores in orlando, check out manfrotto and the competition. The one you choose will be the best choice for you.

I can't speak to the competition but I'd give up a limb before I'd let go of my Manfrotto 680. Heavier than some other monopods, it's still my hands-down favorite.

Is the kit worth getting or would I be better off buying them separately? I know you can spend a lot on it. What is the difference between a pan and a ball?

In my book a monopod is all about being fast and light. That being the case, I slap a rapid connect adapter on the monopod, a quick-release plate on the camera body and call it good. With a Black Rapid fastener I can go from cross body sling to monopod to tripod and back again, all in an instant, without having to fumble. I've rarely needed to do this in reality, but the ability to do so is always there.

A pan head is used for video cameras mainly. A ball head is your best bet for a still camera.

My first choice would be a Manfrotto. Second would be a Gitzo, third would be a Benro. I have a Manfrotto 079 Pro Mono pod and a Benro MP-68 M8.....neither of which I would EVER give up! :) I can't afford a Gitzo! LOL
