Since it takes so long to get a thread approved for the Deals subforum, I will post this here.

For those who are budget conscious, Adorama is offering a sale on the Manfrotto 679B Monopod--$39.88. The tubing is a little narrower than the Manfrotto 680B Monopod, but it supports 22 pounds. It will need a head, but it's $16 less than the Manfrotto 680B (that doesn't come with a head).

Nice monopod at a very good price. I have the grandfather to this one that I bought in 1981. Mine says Bogen on it, but it is the same thing. These stand the test of time for sure. As far as heads go I've never seen the need to have a head on a monopod although some situations call for one.

I have got a great Gitzo monopod with a ARCA SWISS B1 ball head, but I haven't given it a good try yet. I keep planning to, but I either forget, or decide to use a tripod instead! Lol :)
But sooner or later I know I will get some use out of it! It is too cool not to!lol ;)

Sounds like a good deal. I've been considering a 680b myself. Thanks!

It looks like this one goes about an 1" taller than the 680b yet it holds the same amount of weight (22lbs) even though the diameter of the tubing is slightly smaller than the 680b. When I checked earlier today, Amazon matched Adorama's price, but B&H is selling this for $55.95.

I chose not to get a ball head for my monopod. I didn't want to take a chance and have a ball head flop all around so I went with a Manfrotto 234RC tilt head which is made for monopods. Vertical shots will be a challenge with it, but after reading many monopod head reviews, this was the best for my needs.

I am using a ball head, because that is what I had. I couldn't see spending more money for a tilt head, when the ball head will work without any extra cost. Besides the ball head I have should work fine, as long as I don't loosen it up without caution over doing it.:)

For the record I had been considering a Kirk tilt head, until I realized I would be spending money that might be needed elsewhere more.

I bought the 680b when it was a good price and I needed to make an Amazon order over £50 to get a £10 voucher, I thought it was a good enough excuse to buy it anyway.
Saying that I can only remember using it once with my 70-300mm and it just isn't worth carrying the extra weight for a lens that's easy to handhold.

I'm hoping to purchase a 200-500mm in the next few months if I can raise the money and I'm sure it will get good use then. I have no head for it and don't really see why I would need one. For wildlife would a monopod head be of much help and if so what sort? Having practically no experience I can only see using a head slowing things down some with a monopod but I could be completely wrong.
