Lr vs ps

I have been thinking long and hard about which one I should be using more, I can edit 'really' quickly in LR but am I getting the best edit possible? Also the import/catalogue of LR is not my favourite as I would like to base my NEF files on external HDD's and unfortunately LR will not create a catalogue on them I am required to import them and take up HD space on my iMac. I am really considering just using PS as I do know my way around it a bit and it will not take long to get back up to speed again. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding the two?

You can move an existing LR Catalogue to an external drive, as well as moving the images themselves to an external drive... let me know if this is what you meant... IOW, all of LR's stuff can be stored on a single external drive, and not the Mac...

Ah ok I need to find out how to do this as when I move the photos LR tells me the photo is missing.

There is a process, and a sequence to follow... You need to move the photos first, using LR, then you can move the Catalogue and retain all the catalogue's connections to the photos....

Ok I guess I will have to re-import them all and start a fresh, I have created a dedicated NEF folder so that I can always find my originals.

Stop... Watch this video first... You can simply drag stuff without re-importing...

Do not move your catalog to the external HD!! Keep the catalog on your Mac, and build smart previews where it will benefit you, but keep the photos on the external HD. I import, delete the crap, update the metadata and then move the photos from my import directory to their permanent home in the catalog. I catalog by year, with unfinished photos living on my Mac and finished photos living on an external HD - all in the same catalog.

That sounds like a smart way to do it.
