I find with the weight of D7100 and 200-500mm, even over short distances the extra support does make a difference. I do plan to use it for hiking and my previous bag without waist straps wasn't up to the job. I also like that you can access your gear using the waist straps without taking it off. Each to their own though, you know what you need and want from a bag and that might be different from my needs.</blockquote>
