4-17-12 update. I just took a look at nikons imaging service status check and found the same code which is B2 under the catagory which is the same as the two times i previously sent this in for repair.I called and asked the lady I spoke with why they dont do little more investigative research on the issue with this lens since it was already sent in twice. Basically, since my camera store sent it in for me they cant really tell me much.I sent it through the store since I purchased it there my shipping is free and all is covered under warranty.I was not to upset prior to my conversation with this women But I am now a little upset. I can understand not finding the issue on the first try but then the second and now the third. And now i am not getting any answers. I at this point do not feel this is good customer service.

Have you asked the store manager to phone with you present and get some answers. He is Nikon's customer as far as they are concerned and if I was he, I would oblige and ask all the questions that you want answered.

Yep, I asked the camera store if they can find out any info. They did the same thing I did.Checked the nikon site and told me its in the shop.Which tells me they did not call just checked the site.

In the shop for Nikon means that it might just be waiting for a tech to work on it. I would guess if you keep calling them with the WO number (you might ask the store for it), and INSIST to speak to either the tech or supervisor you'll eventually get somewhere.

I had sent a 17-55 to Nikon for major repair (stuck zoom), they called me to say it would be too expensive… I asked them how much and they then told me that I'd have to pay $25 to know. So I said OK for the $25, they sent it to their other shop in Toronto and I got the estimate for $364 which was 1/3 of the price of a new lens… So I had it done, but if I wouldn't have insisted, I would have ended up with a very expensive paper weight.

Good luck pursuing this venture.

I think the camera store is on a wait and see what happens. I would certainly handle this differently if I was the only one dealing with nikon. But,I am going to wait till the lens comes back. If its not repaired correctly this time I will be talking to the camera store and nikon at the same time. Then a decision on the lens will have to be made.I will keep all in the loop.

Update on 4-20-12. I got a call from my camera store stating nikon called them and told the store there is nothing wrong with my lens.So I asked my camera store to explain the false low battery indicator and the out of focus photos. They gave me there contact at nikon and I called him. I wish this was done on the first repair then I could explain indepth what the problems are. I explained what is happening and when it happens. He said he will speak to the tech and we can go from there. I know it is a problem that does not normally occur and it has to be duplicated to find the cause. Mabey this week I will have some news. I used my buddies 80-400 nikon last sunday all day without issues. I will keep you guys posted.

I contacted nikon on 4-27-12 and spoke to the contact given to me by my camera store in regards to my lens. He said he is looking into it. The received date on the site that allows customers to check on a repair was originally 4-13-12 and friday it was changed to 4-27-12 which is like they just received it.It has been there since the 13th and the only thing i have been told is there is nothing wrong with the lens. Which is not the case. I was out shooting with my D-300 and my 80-200 2.8 on saturday. I took about 500 photos and no false low battery indicator or focusing issues.I think nikon had enough time to repair this lens. This is the third time its in service for the same issues.I am starting to get discouraged.

If you were going to sell your nikon equiptment and move into Leica what would you get. I am experiencing frustration with my nikon repair right now and do not want to go through this again.

5-4-12 Update on my nikon 80-400mm lens. The lens arrived back at the camera store yesterday and nikon could not find anything wrong. They said if it happens again to send in my camera.

Final update on the false low battery indicator with my D300 and 80-400 Nikon lens. Took to the camera store this morning and Nikon said nothing wrong with the lens. So I assume they are thinking it is the camera.

I would borrow the 80-400 lens that worked, take it to the store and demonstrate it is the lens. Do you not have a lemon law? three times back and still not fixed I would be demanding a new lens.

I had the same problem with my D300 with multiple lenses, and I only had the original genuine battery. Upgraded the firmware to the latest (1.10) and the problem seems to have gone away. I had versions 1.02 and 1.00 for A/B respectively. Hope that helps.
