the 300 f4 and tc 14ii was my upgrade from the 70-300vr. longer reach and nicer fine detail for birds, good close focus for bugs too.

55-300 is a very wide range and I guess the only reason you need to upgrade is that you need a faster lens. So, you need to know which range you need the fast lens. The higher zoom fast lens is going to cost $!

I am looking for a crisper image. I take wedding and family portraits. Is the 55-300 a good lens for that?

Nothing with that much zoom range will be really crisp.
Sorry, but that is the trade off for convenience.
