Hey all, hope everyones doing well. I'm looking for a portrait lens for my d7000. Right now i have a 50 f/1.8g i absolutely love the lens but im looking for something with a little more reach, like the 85 f/1.8 or the 105 f/2.8.. Have any of you guys used these lenses or recommend one?? I'm kinda leaning towards the 105 but with the crop factor thats like 157mm, would i be losing sharpness at that focal length due to the crop factor?? I would also really like some feedback on the 85 f/1.8g.. Thanks for you're time.

85 1.8g is my favorite for portrait shots. I have the 105 2.8g, but can't get back far enough indoors to use it as a portrait lens.

I second that Rick, my 85 1.8 is my all time favorite lens on my D600 but also really enjoyed it on the D5100 all around great lens hope that helps

DX crop factor has nothing to do with sharpness. Pixel density has a lot more to do with sharpness. If you want to own the finest portrait lens ever made by anyone, get a used 105mm f/2.5 AI/AIS Nikkor. It is manual focus and you can only do aperture priority and manual (maybe program, I am not sure, I never used anything but manual with it), but you will be very hard pressed to find a portrait lens that can even achieve parity with it, much less surpass it. I have a 105mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor now, but had an f/2.5 for over 20 years and I think it is an even match all things considered, but all I gained was speed, not quality.

The 105mm f/2.5 P non-AI Nikkor was first introduced in 1959 and the last version, the AIS, is still the standard, used by professionals and serious amateurs alike, against which all medium telephoto portrait lenses are judged.

I think that is the smartest post I have ever heard on Nikonites...

Most portrait folks want a softer lens as opposed to razor sharp...I mean who wants to study pores except a skin doctor right?

The question needs to be addressed on the "Budget", brand, and if AF or Manual focus is preferred or if it is even acceptable by the orginal poster. Otherwise, this topic will not be as effective in providing the best recommendation.

We know that the OP is looking for a lens greater than 50mm but no greater than 105mm, is that about right? Looking at the price consideration, the 85mm f1.8G will be the ideal lens.

Sorry Glenn...the 105/2.5 is a legendary lens regardless of the parameters...

It is a proven one and has been for many many years...

I'm not saying it is the best just that it is not so easily dismissed...

The 85/1.8 MAY be the ideal lens...that depends on a lot of things...

Thanks so much for all your help and advice!! I have decided to go with a different lens all together, I decided to order the 24-70 2.8 .. Thanks again folks

Portrait whats that? A head and shoulders or a group of 10 in a family ? So you need a lens to cover the 10 from the back of your studio and not get up someones nose in a head and shoulders shot....You can add the soft later make sure its sharp or you will have complaints at the sales point.
