Recommended? For sure.

The price has come down on them recently and pretty inexpensive now. I just bought one from Henrys a month ago and I'm so glad I did. I sold my D5100 and took the cash from that to get it.

I skipped on the extended warranty. Maybe in a year or so I'll step up to FX.......maybe. Lol

Just bought one a couple of months ago. At the time, Nikon had a second year's extended warranty free if you registered your camera within 30 days of purchase. I don't know whether it was a limited time offer (?) I would never take out an extended warranty. If something is going to go wrong with your camera, it's more likely to happen in the first year, otherwise much later on through wear and tear and I think that extended warranties are a bit of a money making scam with little benefit. Personally I would rather spend that money (and a little more) and add it either as a standalone full insurance cover for the camera and gear or as an add-on to my home insurance to cover more than what the warranty covers.

As for the camera, all I can say is NO REGRETS!!

I purchased mine from Adorama (no affiliation) who for $7.95 provides an extra year's warranty on top of the manufacturer warranty for anything purchased from them. Best price I could find on a bundle that included kit 18-105mm, extra Nikon battery, 32MB class 10 SD and a bag I didn't need.

Had it two days, ~150 exposures and I already echo Lee's NO REGRETS!!

I just wanted to add my view on the D7000 vs D7100 consideration, having been in a similar position a few months ago, and this is how I made my decision.

I did a side by side comparison of features.
Then I crossed of any extras that didn't matter to me at all on the D7100.
Then I marked the ones I'd really like to have/was likely to use and come to rely on to improve my photography and or experience of taking photos. There were several but not that many. Then I took the price difference between the two cameras and asked myself whether those "Must have/really, really want to have" features were worth a few hundred more $$
To me they weren't. I would rather put that money towards a great lens. Now your answers may be different but I usually isolate the must have extras on an upgrade or new item and then put them against the cost.

I'd say go with the D7000. It is a very nice camera & can be had for a good price. I bought mine used with approximently 7200 clicks on it at a very friendly price. Is the D7100 better? Sure, but for me it is not worth the premium over the D7000. As far as extended warranties go I'm not a believer.

Love my D7000. Just noticed that Nikon is offering at an even lower price than I paid last fall. Ouch. But I have it now and they will have to pry it out from under my dead, cold fingers. But I never buy extended warranties, either.

thanks guys.
Jumping up from a d5000.
still a beginner but this should last me YEARRRRSSS.
Can't recommend it enough. I too upgraded from the D5000 and it was great. If you buy the camera new, you should get a 1 year manufacturer's warranty and that should cover you. Like others, I'm not a fan of the long-term warranties sold by the stores.

D7000....great camera. It should serve you well for many years to come. Hope you got it for a good price. If you bought it with a VISA card (here in Canada, at least) you get an extra years warranty automatically. Check that out with your VISA card company in the U.S.
Extended warranties are nothing but a cash grab....not worth the money, IMHO. Put that extra money into a new lens or some other photo equipment you might need......maybe a nice tripod? :)
