Lightroom 4

O'k so I just noticed that when I use lightroom to do adjustments on images using my desktop, those adjustments aren't there when viewing those same images on my laptop. I was away last week end and decided to further work on some images I had and when I pulled them up on my laptop, the adjustments weren't applied. Is it the software on the desktop that actually does the "saving" of the adjustments and the external hard drive that just keeps the original? Or am I missing something?

I would guess (note the choice of word) that you actually are working with two installations of LR. The one on the laptop is not aware of the adjustments made on the other computer since the adjustment files on LR are stored in a sidecar that lives with the catalog. I don't know if you could force LR to share the same catalog or if there would be a way to synch both versions.

Remember, I'm guessing. Maybe someone more computer knowledgeable can confirm my suspicion.

Thanks Marcel. I've been using Light room for e few years and never ran into this but makes sense. No big deal as I use the desktop to do 90% of processing anyway.

Lightroom adjustments are made in the catalog, not on the file. If all you did was copy the RAW files to the laptop then the adjustments were left in the catalog on the desktop. If you want to work on them elsewhere then you need to either export them from LR as a PSD or DNG files first, which will apply the adjustments, or modify the LR settings to store the adjustments in a sidecar (XMP) file and then copy that to your computer along with the RAW file.

Are you opening the same catelog on both instances of Lightroom (I mean literally the same catelog file *.lrcat from the same network drive)? Are they both the same version (including updates)?

I have mine setup to automatically write changes to the XMP files so that if my catelog ever corrupted itself, I could just create a new one and at least still have all of my images and the edits that I have done to them. I also don't have to worry about exporting the sidecar file manually if I send the files to a different program for some reason.
