Lighting Question

I've seen a few cameras with sort of like a antenna on it with a soft/strobe light setup and when the picture is taking the flash comes from the lighting setup. Can someone out there explain what that is to me so I can research it

It's called Off Camera flash using a wireless trigger... the trigger(transmitter/antenna) sits on the camera, and fires the Receiver which is attached to any number of flash/strobe light configurations placed OFF Camera to achieve a specific lighting condition...

Yungnuo makes some wireless triggers that are cost effective. A few other brands would be Photix and PocketWizard, off the top of my head.

Depending on on your flash needs, some triggers will be manual only, while others support TTL and sometimes HSS. If those features are important to you, make sure you check out the triggers before you buy.

I have tried a few. My first one was a Cowboy Studio trigger that cost maybe $25. It worked well, sync speeds up to 1/250 I believe. The commander vs trigger used a specific battery so next I upgraded to Yongnuo 603. They are transceivers so they all used the same battery type (AAA) which made it easy and affordable to have rechargeable spares. And lastly, I have a Phottix Odin for use with my Indra 500. I love that thing! I also have the Odin receiver so it can command a speedlite along with my strobe. That allows for HSS up to 1/8000 so that's a nice plus. The Phottix has the most features but is also much more expensive (the Yonguo 603's were $30 for a pair - I bought two pairs) while the Odin controller was around $200 and the receiver was about $100 I believe. Worth it though! I've never used a Pocket Wizard but the Phottix stuff seems to be a good chunk cheaper and is very reliable IMO
