so at work i normally carry a pocket knife (and everywhere else for that matter). . .i recently purchased a new knife on ebay, i posted a pic of it in the reptile thread. . .that started the fuel for this new addiction. . .joined a knife forum and fed the fire even more lol. . .

heres some of the knives ive picked up shortly after. . .they are beautiful subjects for still life i believe, and trying to capture it is a lot of fun. . .heres some snaps. . .thanks for the look. . .

thanks. . . its a challenge to capture these. . .the straight on shots are not very pleasing to my eye. . .as it doesnt really seem balanced as a whole in the pic. . .so angling the knives seems to work better. . .(it also catches the light from the flash a bit better also. . .) so next was my depth of field issue with the knife being angled. . .i tried different f stops on a lot of my attempts, and came to a happy balance with these shots. . .i still love the bokeh effect and like to incorporate it into my photos. . .

thanks again for the comment. . ..

another thing you can research/try is focus stacking,, which allows you to merge photos and obtain super sharp focus thru the whole picture.

Awesome shots! Great lighting, love the feel of the knife/gun combo, very industrial. I have to get some pics up of my gear too, thanks for the inspiration!

thanks. . . glad to inspire lol. . . the gun/knife shot was inspired by some pics in the bladeforums I recently joined. . . . since I don't have a real gun I used my air soft pistol in the shot. . . theyre 1:1 ratios of the real fire arm. . .

for the shot I used my sb700 turned to either the left or right, depending on the angle of the knife. . . had my son hold a white poster board to the side to bounce the light back to the subject . . . took a few attempts so the blade didn't get blown out from the reflecting light. . . black blanket used for the foreground/background . . . and a little PP in photoshop playing with the curves. . .

thanks again all. . .

I see in one of your shots that you have a ballisong. I haven't seen one of these for a long time. I have a hand-made one given to me by a friend from Mindenau. Beautiful piece of work, about 8 inches long with a solid brass handle.

good eye. . . even bokehd out you saw that. . . that knife was actually my fathers. it's over 30years old and shows it . . . it's an old Parker balisong with brass handles.. . due to legalities I'm not able to purchase new ones but I still love flipping that one around the house. . . thanks. . .
