Message: <blockquote data-quote="Alx" data-source="post: 164801" data-attributes="member: 13868">I don't see any absolute way to answer the sharpness question, except to admit that the best prime ( single focal length ) lenses are going to be sharper than any zooms can be.  Zooms are for convenience, and entail compromises.  If you have to have speed as well, at least consider the DX 17~55 f2.8 equivalent to 26mm~82mm.  But with the crazy high ISO capability of new DSLRs, slower zooms are fine for most situations.  I use the 16~85 as my standard lens on my D7100, 'think it is the best all-around lens to keep on the camera, unless something wider, longer, or faster is needed.   For the highest quality, absolute sharpest lens,  I believe the AFS 24mm f1.4 is it, but at around $1,600 or more, and a bulky heavy lens too,  I haven't felt compelled to go the expense.</blockquote>
