Lens Dilemma

Ok so I have a sigma 18-50 and a sigma 50-200. My dilemma is I want an 18-200mm for the simplicity of not changing lenses so often when I'm out. Do any of you have lenses that overlap each other or have this type of combo? I'm going on vacation in 3 months and I'm trying to just bring the basics.

yes,, I have traveled with the 18x200 on trips, and taken some nice pictures, This is one of those lens that suffered from too much early success and enthusiam, when it first came out, it could do no wrong, some called the wonder lens,, and the praise was too high.

Then others began to knock it,, soft in corners, distortion, etc, and now,, almost like it is now on the lower rung of lens.

but,, the lens works fairly well, super convenient, and capable lens. Is it as sharp as a prime,, no, a pro zoom, no, or a zoom with less range, no..

but,, on those trips/days, that you want a single lens,,, sweet. Here is one I took with the 18x200 with my D300. I think the details are plenty fine.

I'm kind of all over the place. When I shoot the events at my school I tend to stay in the wider side. When I go for walks and vacation I tend to use the long side of the lens.

Wow that is a great looking photo. Have you traveled with the other option of multiple lenses covering this mm range? It's kind of a pain sometimes I think.

I have traveled with a heavy bag, strapped to my back, an a whole arsenel of lens, to the oh,, 3 primes, to the holy trinity (well my holy trinity which is a 20-35, 35-70, 80-200 2.8s with a side bag lens holding the 15mm wide angle,

When I had the D80/300 combo,, I like the one wide angle (10-20), and the 18-200 combo,

and.. I really can't tell you my favorite combo, all depends on my mood, and goals. and how much flexibility I have with gear. I love carrying the D7000 and a 28mm, 50mm, and 105, with cargo pants, just throw the lens into pockets, and the camera weighs next to nothing, and well, those three lens cover a wide range,, plus the 105 is a macro for the little creates/flowers/etc.

I also like the 20-35, 35-70, and a 35-150 ancient zoom,, a cool combo. that allows me to put two lens pouches on a belt, and be ready for just about anything.

As a habit, I take my lens out of pouches/bags, and then reload for all shoots, making a conscious effort to mix it up..

One advantage of being now middle age,, is having a long time to collect lens, on the other hand,, well,, one is middle age.. darn.

Lol. I have a lot to learn from you. With all those lenses you put in your pockets, do you take a flash as well?

No longer owning any zooms (have not had any for years, not a fan of them), I feel your pain, usually from L3 to L5. I have at any given time from 10-11 Nikkor primes from 16mm to 300mm f/2.8 in my bag, along with at least 1 camera body, filters, flash/incident and spot meter, various filters, Kodak Color Data Guide and various and sundry items including film. If I drag my behemouth 600mm f/4 AIS along with me, that is 14 extra pounds if I carry it in the case, about 12 pounds without. And that is only one of my camera bags. The other one always has 1 Hasselblad 500CM body with NC2 prism finder, 3 - 4 film backs, and 5 CZ lenses from 40 to 250mm, filters, plus my two meters from the other bag. It does not happen all that often, but I have been known to lug both bags when I want to shoot both 35mm/FX and 2¼. Throw in a tripod and we are looking at about 75 pounds +/-. But alas, that is the cross we bear for our art!

That's funny you say that because I just deleted out of my wish list online. I'll just take the grip off and toss my small lens on there like you said.

I recently purchased a Tamron 18-270 f3.5 lens for my D7000. This is the perfect vacation or walk around lens. It small and light and takes great photos, nice and sharp.

Just something to think about. It cost about $550 USD after a $100 mail in rebate.

+ 1 for the Tamron 18-270 for a travel lens. I took mine on a recent cruise to Vanuatu and it performed quite well. I picked mine up 2nd hand in mint condition for $350. I did however, also take my 50mm 1.8G for low light stuff.

Yes if that lens could cover 18-200 with a f2.8 and it is light and cost little, that would be the best lens. No, there isn't one today. Short of changing between lens or having 2 cameras, you might want to have a 3rd lens for general purpose. 18-105 kit lens.

Basics: D7000 + 35mm f1.8G DX + SB 700 0r SB 910. To me that's compact and meets my idea of basics. You have 2 of 3 items that I already mentioned.

I'm getting ready to purchase the sb700. I'm just waiting for confirmation I have another paid gig in April and I'm ordering.
