Lava flow!!!

Hi, I'm on a cruse in Hawaii, and we'll be going by the lava flows on the the big island at 10:00pm (we'll be out at sea) and I was wondering what the best setting would be. I'm using a D5100 with a 18-300 lens, also I don't know how far away we'll be, if that makes a difference.

There is no answer to that question. You will have to wait till you get there and see how the lighting is and how fast the lava flow is.

the best advice I can give you is to not step in the lava.

Touch it. Touch it! TOUCH IT!!!

Like Don said there is no way to give you an exact answer. I'm thinking though you will probably need a higher shutter speed due to the movement of the boat.

Oh dear, I'm guessing you would need to use the full 300mm zoom because of the distance and at night you would have to use high ISO to allow a fast shutter.

With the bobbing of the boat you would probably need to use a shutter 4 times faster than the general rule of 1 over the focal length for shutter speed.

Then there's getting the focus right too. Seems you were never meant to get photos but was the trip worth it, did you get to see a good show?
