Large Format Scanners

My Dear Nikonite Friends,

I need some help finding a large format flatbed scanner. I have retired from my job as a school administrator and I plan on pursuing a sideline photographic business. I have been shooting in the parks for kids playing sports in areas where paying for a normal team photo is out of the question. Last year I started doing senior pictures for students that normally would not have been able to take senior pictures due to cost. I can honestly say that I’m not taking business away from the “big boys” because most of the students I’m shooting would have just gone without any pictures at all.

For about 10-years I have been helping families with digital photo restoration for memorial services and anniversary celebrations. I tended to not charge what my services were worth, and now that I could use a decent supplement to my income it’s time for me to expand this portion of my business.

I have had several people come to me over the years that have large portraits that simply would not fit in my legal sized scanner. In the past apologized and sent them on to other people, but now I would like to finally purchase a high quality large format flatbed scanner. I would like to be able to go to at least 11x17, perhaps even larger. I am not interested in printing because I have this done professionally by a friend who owns equipment that is way above what I could ever afford.

I’m putting a budget limit of $3000-$4000 on this scanner. It needs to be flatbed because I want to be able to bring in portraits that are 100 years old and not worry about damaging them. Many of the large format scanners would rip an old photo or portrait to shreds. I refuse to allow that to happen.

If you own a large format scanner that you would recommend I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks in advance for your help.

You might be better off finding a local printer that has a professional scanner and having them do the scan and deliver it to you on a CD. I have a HP Officejet 7500A Wide Format e-All-in-One Printer series - E910 which will scan up to 11 x 17 I think and Print up to 13 x 19. The scans are OK but when I have something important to scan or larger I take it to the local Pro Printing place and they do the scan for me and then I do the Photoshopping. For what you are budgeting for a scanner it would take a lot of scan to pay for.

Thanks to you all for your responses. Epson has actually already come out with the 11000 model. The reviews are really good but they are having trouble when it comes to repairs. I wish I knew someone who actually has one. That is actually the machine that I'm looking at right now.

Don, I love the idea of going to a professional to scan, but the problem is that I retired due to heart and back issues. Getting out to have things scanned could be a problem. I shoot in the park usually from one place. When we shoot seniors on location my daughter needs to be the driver for the day. I was hoping to set up a studio in my home that would not have me out and about very much.

I'm setting this business up for my daughter. She has a better eye than I do, but she does not have the on task experience I have in actually doing the restorations. My work is as good as anybody's and I'd like to be able to teach her to do photo restoration even better than I do it now. It's fun and very rewarding, and in my case I can charge low prices and help families that really want to have their family history restored through photographs. In a few years I can pass this 100% on to my daughter. The low quality photo finishing that has taken place over the past 50 years will eventually lead her to a decent business that will supplement her teaching income for many years.
