Laptop, Why have you forsaken me?

Well. Jinxed myself.

All the recent talk of backing up files and extra drives...

Last week my 3TB drive arrived in the mail and I had every intent of backing up all my photos to it. My recent hours at work have been crazy and I figured I would wait until the 15th to do this as I will be on leave for the holidays.

Two days ago my laptop decided to show me a picture of its own... the BSOD!
Since this happened I have been unable to boot the system as it is stuck in some part of the boot up.

The drive still spins and makes noise so I know it didnt seize up and it is still getting power.

My initial fix, which I will be able to try tomorrow, is purchasing a 2.5 drive enclosure I can use to convert it to a USB drive and attach it to my daughter's computer. Will see if this lets me acces/recover the files.

If that doesnt work I guess i will have to visit a tech place / Best Buy to try and fix.

We will see. No photo posting until that time though. :disturbed:

So my lesson/advice to you all:
Do not put off backing up your folders/files. In all honesty it would have taken less than 5 minutes to set it up and do it. I was simply LAZY.

I have had this happen to me before. And what i will tell you sounds crazy. But i read it online and tried it and i will be darned if it didn't work. Long enough for me to get all my files and to set up the new drive. This happened on my desktop. But it may be worth a try. Like it said it sounds crazy but it worked for me. I could get it to do anything.

I removed the HD and stuck it in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Took it out hooked it back up and it worked long enough for me to do what i needed it to do. You can google it. But i wont guarantee that it will work for you. But it did for me! Good Luck

Ouch, that sucks.. I have my stuff backled up (all photos 2 places) my newer stuff is in 3 places. I have been thinking of of looking at one of those Large capacity drives to back up photo's and more...

Hope you get lucky...

I had a crash a couple of times and lost everything. That taught me a lesson. I now have duplicate network drives and backup on each one of them. Been thinking about online backup recently. Anyone using that that has good experience?

I'm sorry to hear of the potential loss!
I work in IT. Cannot comment on this lack of data redundancy...
Let this be a thought to everyone to do it YESTERDAY rather than too late.

I also cannot comment on cloud storage. All mine is done on drives in-house. I prefer to keep my material close. Cloud storage is more for music and movies and things so I can stream them to wherever I need them. Though, I'll admit, this is also done from servers in my house...

I would NOT stick my laptop hard drive in the freezer if it's just BSOD'ed on ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And that's free advice from an IT professional :)

As you drive isn't making any obvious signs of death, and the fact it appears this is a sudden BSOD for you, chances are the drive is fine and something else has failed. Could be simple as a driver update or something more complex.
Have you tried booting into safe mode?

As you're going to be hooking the drive up to an external enclosure, no sense in potentially killing it before managing to get access to it.
One thing to note, if you have encrypted your files you will run into problems accessing it potentially

try hitting the F1 key right at boot time, see if you can get it to come up in BIOS, then exit, and boot as stated in safe mode,

if you have tried all that, definitely, external drive, easy to plug in and pull of data. I have done that on a couple of boxes for friends, usually works like a charm.

good luck.

All

Thanks for your help/advice. Have tried the F1 (BIOS) but only given the option to boot to WIN7. No safe boot option.
FEDEX shows the External drive case is out for delivery so it will give me something to do while the Wife and kids are that their Dance recital rehersal.

We will see what happens.
